Gnomish Naming Canon

Kutnyelv

A compact naming framework for gnomish place names using:

  • Hebrew triconsonantal roots as semantic cores
  • Hungarian-style suffixes for place, people, and civic forms
  • Greek and Latin-style prestige affixes for imperial, ceremonial, and institutional names

Usage Pattern

Base pattern:

[optional prestige prefix] + [surface form of Hebrew root] + [suffix]

Examples:

  • Var + hoph + varos -> Varhophvaros
  • Petra + nahar + viz -> Petranaharviz
  • Aure + malak + ium -> Auremalakium

Sound Notes

Compared to dwarven or elven forms, gnomish names should prefer:

  • compact civic rhythm
  • repeated use of v, z, h, k, r, and t
  • tighter endings suited to wards, workshops, guilds, archives, and canals
  • names that sound planned, measured, and administratively real

Notes

  • Surface forms should be smoothed for pronunciation before canonization.
  • Keep names between 2 and 5 syllables where possible.
  • Prefer repeated family patterns within a region so names feel historically related.
  • Gnomish forms should feel tighter, more civic, and more infrastructural than elven ones.
  • Favor names that sound like cities, guilds, waterworks, archives, wards, and fortified districts rather than sweeping sacred landscapes.
